The Most Highly-Ranked Baby Formulas: A Comprehensive Review
Impact-Site-Verification: 9881066d-ebdb-4620-9a77-cbfce28b3fa8
If we go back to world history, what we’d find would be a number of mothers unable to breastfeed their children. In fact, there is evidence of families using animal milk to feed their infants in the B.C. years. Alternatively, some women were able to lean on other lactating women to feed their baby, but that was on the more rare occasion.
The use of animal milk as a newborn’s primary source of nutrition is not a novel idea in of itself, it is its powdered form that is relatively new to human life. Since 1865 to be exact. A French scientist by the name of Justus von Liebig developed, patented, and marketed the world’s first baby formula. He called it Liebig’s Soluble Food for Babies. What did it contain you may ask? It was actually quite simple: cow’s milk, wheat, malted flour, and potassium bicarbonate.
This was around the time artificial preservatives were being developed for the first time in history for a longer shelf life. In fact, today’s formula would not last more than a few days without them.
By 1883 there were a minimum of 27 baby formula brands competing to be the best infant formula in the market – not much has changed we can say.
Formula is more popular now than ever. With the majority of moms opting for at least one brand of formula for their baby. It has truly become the norm, but have we questioned the quality of these formulas by its ingredients?
I, for one, know how overwhelming it feels to stand before the formula aisle only to find myself utterly confused as to which brand is the best for my infant. Not only do you feel pressured to get the best one for your baby, but have you seen the prices?? Coupons anyone?
This guide will walk you through 10 baby formulas, all of which are primarily organic with the exception of a couple – for comparison purposes.
For each of the 10 baby formulas I will provide the complete ingredients list as of 01/09/2026, a pros list, a red flags list (things I’d stay away from), and at the end of each formula’s section, I will provide my final impression as to whether or not I recommend the product.
Please keep in mind that I will be analyzing each of the formula’s ingredients, the company’s ethical/unethical measures, and their sourcing. My review is with a lens similar to that of which I use when looking for the best products for own 9 month old who I have currently weaned and is exclusively on formula now.
I hope this helps.
KENDAMIL ORGANIC INFANT FORMULA
Ingredients:
ORGANIC GRASS-FED WHOLE MILK, ORGANIC DEMINERALISED MILK WHEY PROTEIN POWDER, ORGANIC VEGETABLE OILS (SUNFLOWER, COCONUT, RAPESEED), ORGANIC SKIMMED MILK, ORGANIC GALACTO-OLIGOSACCHARIDES (GOS), LESS THAN 2% OF: CALCIUM CITRATE, SODIUM CITRATE, POTASSIUM CHLORIDE, CALCIUM LACTATE, MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE, SCHIZOCHYTRIUM SP. OIL, VITAMIN C, POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE, CHOLINE BITARTRATE, INOSITOL, MORTIERELLA ALPINA OIL, TAURINE, IRON PYROPHOSPHATE, NUCLEOTIDES (CYTIDINE-5′-MONOPHOSPHATE, DISODIUM URIDINE-5’-MONOPHOSPHATE ADENOSINE-5′-MONOPHOSPHATE, DISODIUM INOSINE-5′-MONOPHOSPHATE, DISODIUM GUANOSINE-5′-MONOPHOSPHATE), ZINC SULPHATE, VITAMIN E, NIACIN, CALCIUM PANTOTHENATE, COPPER SULPHATE, THIAMIN, RIBOFLAVIN, VITAMIN A, VITAMIN B6, MANGANESE SULPHATE, FOLIC ACID, POTASSIUM IODIDE, SODIUM SELENITE, VITAMIN K, VITAMIN D3, BIOTIN VITAMIN B12. CONTAINS MILK
I have heard nothing but good things on the Kendamil brand and I am very pleased to see the company is using grass-fed whole milk. This particular formula also contains whey protein powder, thumbs up there. However, right away they note a heavy use of vegetable oils. Although they note these oils are organic, the issue of vegetable oil use is much more problematic – organic or not.
What are vegetable oils and what is the issue with vegetable oils?
Vegetable oils are oils extracted (quite aggressively) from certain vegetables or seeds. Most common ones are sunflower, canola, rapeseed, etc.) Although these seeds naturally contain very rich oils, the problem occurs in the extraction process where most of the nutrients are stripped away harshly. Not to mention, these oils are almost instantly rancid as soon as they are extracted causing a lot of inflammation is our bodies. Unfortunately, however, it is much cheaper for baby formula companies to obtain the fats needed for their formula from vegetables and seeds, like we see with Kendamil and every other formula we will go through in this article, rather than using rich grass-fed animal fat. A source our bodies are much more accustomed to and is not nearly as processed as vegetable oils.
Another issue I see with Kendamil’s ingredients is their addition of skimmed milk. First of all, skimmed milk has zero fat. It’s in the name itself. Again, companies find this method much more affordable than to use full-fat pasture-raised cow’s milk. Skimmed milk is not only watered down tremendously, it also contains no cholesterol. An essential part of a newborn’s diet. Cholesterol is used by the infant (and everyone for that matter) to make hormones. In fact, did you know baby boys go through a mini-puberty stage between 1-3 months where they have a significant surge in testosterone? This is one example on how important it is to include cholesterol in their food source – for both boys and girls. And it the one thing strip away in formulas.
What are some good things about this formula you may ask?
Like I mentioned earlier, Kendamil does source their milk from grass-fed cows and they include some healthy prebiotics for their baby. Interestingly, Kendamil is the only brand my circle of friends use because of how well their babies digest the milk. Looking at the ingredients list and its nutritional content I can see that the addition of those prebiotics plus not as much iron content as the other formulas may be the reasons for easier digestion.
PROS: Grass-fed cows, prebiotics, whole milk as first ingredient, lower iron content (ideal for babies up to 6 months old), and includes human milk oligosaccharides.
RED FLAGS: Vegetable oils and skimmed milk
KENDAMIL CLASSIC INFANT FORMULA
Ingredients:
Whole Milkº, Demineralised Whey Powder, Vegetable Oils (Sunflower Oil, Coconut Oil, Rapeseed Oil), Lactose, Skimmed Milk Powder, Galacto-Oligosaccharides(GOS)¥1, Less Than 2% of: Whey Protein Concentrate Alpha-Lactalbumin, Calcium Citrate, Potassium Chloride, Calcium Lactate, Sodium Citrate, Choline Bitartrate, Fructo-Oligosaccharides(FOS)¥2, Magnesium Chloride, Schizochytrium sp. Oilª, Sodium Ascorbate, Potassium Hydroxide, Inositol, L-Tyrosine, Mortierella Alpina Oil≯, Taurine, Iron Pyrophosphate, Nucleotides (Cytidine-5’-monophosphate, disodium Uridine-5’-monophosphate, Adenosine- 5’-monophosphate, disodium Inosine-5’-monophosphate, disodium Guanosine-5’ monophosphate), L-Phenylalanine, Zinc Sulfate, Vitamin E, Niacin, Calcium Pantothenate, Copper Sulfate, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, Manganese Sulfate, Folic Acid∆, Potassium Iodide, Sodium Selenite, Vitamin K,Vitamin D3, Biotin, Vitamin B12
This is another Kendamil brand but their non-organic option. I thought I’d add this one to last for comparison purposes.
PROS: Whole milk as first ingredient, whey powder, includes lactose (which is also found in breastmilk), contains human milk oligosaccharides (protect gut lining, infant immunity, and healthy gut bacteria, prebiotics, and low iron (this is a good thing for babies 0-6 months old).
Why is a lower iron content ideal for baby formula? Especially when given to babies 0-6 months old?
Breastmilk naturally contains very low iron (0.3-0.4 mg/L) and this is because iron competes with zinc. In the first 6 months of a babies life, their body is prioritizing zinc for immune support. It is not until 6 months+ that they start producing more iron. Therefore, not only is supplemental iron hard to digest, a baby’s tiny body is not made to digest large amounts of iron. In formula iron content ranges from 1mg-1.2mg/5 ounces on average. That is 3-4x more than what babies are intended to take!
RED FLAGS: Vegetable oils and skimmed milk
I recommend Kendamil, given all the baby formulas in the market right now contain vegetable oils. The only thing I feel uneasy about is the skimmed milk. Other than that, this is a very promising and gentle formula for babies.
BOBBIE ORGANIC GENTLE INFANT FORMULA w/ IRON
INGREDIENTS:
ORGANIC LACTOSE, ORGANIC PARTIALLY HYDROLYZED WHEY PROTEIN, ORGANIC HIGH OLEIC (SAFFLOWER OR SUNFLOWER) OIL, ORGANIC LOW ERUCIC ACID RAPESEED OIL, ORGANIC COCONUT OIL, ORGANIC LINOLEIC (SAFFLOWER OR SUNFLOWER) OIL, LESS THAN 1%: ORGANIC LOW ERUCIC ACID RAPESEED LECITHIN, MORTIERELLA ALPINA OIL**, SCHIZOCHYTRIUM SP. OIL***, VITAMIN A PALMITATE, CHOLECALCIFEROL (VITAMIN D3), d/-ALPHA TOCOPHERYL ACETATE (VITAMIN E), MIXED TOCOPHEROLS CONCENTRATE, PHYTONADIONE (VITAMIN K), ASCORBYL PALMITATE, THIAMINE HYDROCHLORIDE (VITAMIN B1), RIBOFLAVIN (VITAMIN B2), PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE (VITAMIN B6), CYANOCOBALAMIN (VITAMIN B12), NIACINAMIDE (VITAMIN B3), FOLIC ACID, CALCIUM PANTOTHENATE, BIOTIN, ASCORBIC ACID (VITAMIN C), CHOLINE BITARTRATE, INOSITOL, L-CARNITINE, CALCIUM CARBONATE, CALCIUM CHLORIDE, CALCIUM HYDROXIDE, CALCIUM PHOSPHATE, FERROUS SULFATE, ZINC SULFATE, MANGANESE SULFATE, CUPRIC SULFATE, MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE, POTASSIUM BICARBONATE, POTASSIUM CHLORIDE, POTASSIUM PHOSPHATE, POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE, POTASSIUM IODIDE, SODIUM CHLORIDE, SODIUM SELENITE, SODIUM CITRATE. **A SOURCE OF ARACHIDONIC ACID (ARA) ***A SOURCE OF DOCOSAHEXAENOIC ACID (DHA)’ ‘
PROS: Contains organic lactose and whey protein.
RED FLAGS: Bobbie claims they have modeled their baby formula after breast milk by not adding cow’s milk, only organic lactose (breast milk has lactose and obviously not cow’s milk). Makes sense, right? Except for the fact that the company is getting the needed fat content from vegetable oils only. Huge no no and BIG red flag. We must not forget that no matter how much a formula claims to be like breastmilk, it is not. Therefore, we must take extra measures to ensure our babies are getting all their macros from clean, animal foods not ultra-processed and rancid, if I may add, vegetable oils. Plus too much iron for newborns.
I do not recommend.
BOBBIE ORIGINAL ORGANIC FORMULA
ORGANIC LACTOSE, ORGANIC NONFAT MILK, ORGANIC LOW ERUCIC ACID RAPESEED OIL, ORGANIC LINOLEIC SUNFLOWER OIL, ORGANIC WHEY PROTEIN CONCENTRATE, ORGANIC HIGH OLEIC SUNFLOWER OIL, ORGANIC COCONUT OIL, LESS THAN 2% OF: ORGANIC LOW ERUCIC ACID RAPESEED LECITHIN, SCHIZOCHYTRIUM SP. OIL*, MORTIERELLA ALPINA OIL** CALCIUM CARBONATE, CALCIUM PHOSPHATE, SODIUM CHLORIDE, POTASSIUM CHLORIDE, POTASSIUM CITRATE, L-CARNITINE, MAGNESIUM PHOSPHATE, CHOLINE BITARTRATE, CALCIUM ASCORBATE, INOSITOL, POTASSIUM IODIDE, FERROUS SULFATE, d-ALPHA TOCOPHERYL ACETATE, ZINC SULFATE, VITAMIN C PALMITATE, NIACINAMIDE, CALCIUM PANTOTHENATE, BIOTIN, VITAMIN A, THIAMIN HYDROCHLORIDE, COPPER SULFATE, RIBOFLAVIN, MIXED TOCOPHEROLS, PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE, SODIUM SELENATE, MANGANESE SULFATE, PHYLLOQUINONE, FOLIC ACID, VITAMIN D3, AND VITAMIN B12. * A SOURCE OF DOCOSAHEXAENOIC ACID (DHA) ** A SOURCE OF ARACHIDONIC ACID (ARA)’ ‘
PROS: Similar to the Gentle Infant Formula by Bobbie above, their original formula contains organic lactose. Also, I do not see any majorly harmful preservatives.
RED FLAGS: This one does contain cow’s milk, but it’s nonfat milk (no thanks). Nonfat milk, although organic in this case, is heavily processed and is loaded with chemicals to restore the white color in milk. This is because when you remove all the fat from milk it turns blue. And well that’s just not appealing to the eye and it probably won’t sell as well, so the nonfat milk companies add chemicals to present the processed milk as creamy and white as possible. Not to mention: Baby needs fat!! Nonfat milk literally has no fat in it, therefore, no cholesterol – which again, is vital for human development. Lastly, this formula is very heavy on vegetable oils.
I do not recommend this formula for your baby.
BOBBIE ORGANIC WHOLE MILK FORMULA w/ IRON
LACTOSE, ORGANIC WHOLE MILK, ORGANI LINOLEIC SUNFLOWER OIL, ORGANIC LOW ERUCIC ACID RAPESEED OIL, ORGANIC WHEY PROTEIN CONCENTRATE ORGANIC HIGH OLEIC SUNFLOWER OIL, ORGANIC COCONUT OIL, ORGANIC NONFAT MILK, LESS THAN 2 % OF: ORGANIC LOW ERUCIC ACID RAPESEED LECITHIN, SCHIZOCHYTRIUM SP. PROS: One last Bobbie formula, I promise! This Bobbie formula does contain whole milk (and it’s organic and grass-fed, yay!)
RED FLAGS: *Sigh* They still add nonfat milk and vegetable oils. Plus way too much iron per 5 ounces of milk for babies this small.
I do not recommend (so close :p)
SIMILAC PURE BLISS READY TO FEED ORGANIC INFANT FORMULA

(a) Source of ARA. (b) Prebiotic.
PROS: Includes lactose and a bit of organic coconut oil (coconut oil is nutrient-dense)
RED FLAGS: Only contains nonfat milk no whole milk (no thanks), vegetable oils including soy oil (try to stay away from soy as this causes more estrogen in the body and can greatly affect both baby boys and baby girls), too much iron (1.2mg/5 ounces), and folic acid (babies cannot digest this form well, folate is the ideal form for proper digestion and use).
I do not recommend.
HAPPY BABY ORGANIC INFANT (0-6 months old) FORMULA

Happy Baby claims their formula is modeled after breastmilk but they are only using nonfat milk. Breastmilk is loaded with good fats!

RED FLAGS: Does not include whole milk in the ingredients, the formula is loaded with vegetable oils like canola, sunflower, and palm oil (no thank you), and folic acid is used instead of the more digestible form: folate.

PROS: Includes: Lactose, whey protein, and prebiotics
RED FLAGS: Nonorganic; lots of vegetable oils, nonfat milk, and CONTAINS CARAGEENAN (a carcinogen)
I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS ONE BY ANY MEANS. Stay away from carrageenan, always. Especially with babies.
Note: Do not be fooled by a more expensive product like this one. What really matters is what it consists of. In this case, this formula is not worth almost $50!
NARA ORGANICS WHOLE MILK INFANT FORMULA
Ingredients:
INGREDIENTS: ORGANIC WHOLE MILK*, ORGANIC LACTOSE, ORGANIC VEGETABLE OIL BLEND (ORGANIC OLEIC SUNFLOWER, ORGANIC COCONUT, ORGANIC LOW ERUCIC RAPESEED, ORGANIC LINOLEIC SUNFLOWER), ORGANIC WHEY PROTEIN CONCENTRATE, ORGANIC GALACTOOLIGOSACCHARIDE**, AND LESS THAN 1%: ORGANIC LOW ERUCIC ACID RAPESEED LECITHIN, MORTIERELLA ALPINA OIL***, SCHIZOCHYTRIUM SP. Alright, let’s end on a good note with Nara Organics.
PROS: Contains Organic whole milk, organic lactose, they are pickier about the quality of the vegetable oils they do use, whey protein
RED FLAGS: Vegetable oils are still used, folic acid in the formula instead of folate, high iron amount for babies 0-6 months old.
Overall, I recommend this formula by looking at its ingredients alone. In fact, Nara Organics and Kendamil are a close match to my number one recommended. Kendamil unfortunately contains skimmed milk, but has less iron that makes it gentler for newborns. Whereas, Nara Organic’s formula does not have skimmed or nonfat milk, but their whole milk is not from grass-fed cows like we saw in Kendamil’s formula.
Conclusion:
After this comprehensive review of the ingredients lists, I recommend Kendamil’s organic infant baby formula or Nara Organics Whole Milk Infant Formula. Of course, every baby is different and will digest foods and formula differently, so always listen in to your baby’s cues to determine what is best for them. From an ingredients perspective, though, you can guarantee a cleaner, more nutrient-dense formula with Kendamil and Nara Organics.
